Gay Player Michael Sam Cut From Dallas Cowboys Practice Squad

The Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League cut gay football player Michael Sam from their practice squad after signing him as a favor to the league front office.

Sam was cut today after spending 7 weeks on the Cowboys practice squad.
The NFL’s first openly gay player was also cut by the St. Louis Rams — the team that drafted him a few spots ahead of Mr. Irrelevant.

Gay groups protested loudly when the Rams declined to sign Sam to their practice squad and 31 other teams bypassed him.

Dallas signed Sam to their eight-man practice squad prior to the season, on September 3. Sam, the first openly gay player in the NFL, was originally drafted by the St. Louis Rams in the seventh round of the 2014 NFL Draft.
Sam has yet to see action in a regular season game since joining the Cowboys practice squad. He spent training camp and the preseason with the Rams, finishing an impressive run of exhibition play with three sacks in four games.
Other NFL teams have 24 hours to put in a waiver claim for Sam. If he clears waivers, teams are free to sign him to their practice squad or active roster. The Canadian Football League is another option for the University of Missouri product and 2013 SEC co-Defensive Player of the Year. The Montreal Alouettes own his CFL free agent rights.

Prior to the Cowboys signing Sam on Sept. 3, a few NFL players expressed their discomfort over showering with a man who is sexually attracted to other men.
