Gen. Kayihura says sorry to Bebe Cool

The Inspector General of Police has apologised for the weekend incident in which a special police constable shot and injured reggae musician Bebe Cool and members of his entourage.

Maj. Gen. Kale Kayihura offered the apology in person on Tuesday when he visited the musician, whose real name is Moses Ssali, at Nsambya Hospital in Kampala.

“I am really sorry and regret what happened,” Maj. Gen. Kayihura said, “I am taking this matter seriously not merely because of its gravity but because Police officers must understand the force to be applied in a given situation.”

The apology from the police chief comes amidst growing concerns about the conduct of the men and women under his supervision, especially their use of armed force against civilians. Bebe Cool was shot several times in both legs and has undergone two surgery procedures since the incident which happened in the wee hours of Saturday morning at an entertainment complex in the city centre.

Two of the musician’s minders and a special police constable sustained serious gunshot wounds during the shooting.
The policeman, David Oluka, is admitted at Mulago Hospital while the two minders are receiving treatment at Nsambya Hospital.
