Ray C was once considered the hottest female artiste in the East African region. She won numerous awards between 2004 and 2011 and then she disappeared after her successful hit, Moto Moto.
What a lot of people did not know about the singer was that she had a serious drug issue which escalated when she came to live in Kenya. This week, photos of Ray C have appeared in Tanzanian papers showing her in a sorry state of health.
"She used to have to take drugs before shows. It was so bad that sometimes she would go backstage during a show, and when we'd check up on her we'd find that she had blacked out from taking drugs. Then we had to wake her up to continue the show," he said.
He particlarly recalled one incident that took place in Eldoret when she was set to perform at The Flame Hotel. "There was once she went to do a show in Eldoret and we had agreed on what I'll pay her. After I paid her what I owe, she said, "lazima unilipe zaidi, kwani hawa watu wote wamekuja kuniona. Nikashangaa kwani haelewi mkataba?" he told Willy M. Tuva. That is when the promoter suspected she might be asking for more money to get drugs.
Things got so bad for Ray C during her Kenyan stay, she was even arrested. "There was once she had been caught by the cops with weed in the house and taken to Pangani station." Kamande, the owner of South B's Picolina club bailed her out and promised to take care of her. He put her up in a house in South B but Ray C still continued taking drugs till she couldn't go to work.
Her Kenyan acquaintances decided to do an intervention with her friends who she worked with at a radio station in Tanzania. That is when they took her to rehab in Iringa (Ray C's hometown).
Fred, who made sure she got back home in Dar Es Salam, doesn't know how she is doing for now. He said he is waiting to see if she can get back to work in four months. He said, "pengine akirudisha fahamu zake. Unajua huwezi jua mipango ya Mungu."
