Video: Salt-N-Pepa Celebrated on Oprah’s ‘Rock Goddesses’ Show

Oprah and Salt-N-Pepa

Salt-N-Pepa became one of the few hip-hop acts to grace the stage on “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” The legendary female rap crew was featured on Oprah’s “Rock Goddesses of the ’70s and ’80s” episode honoring music icons including Stevie Nicks, Pat Benatar, and Joan Jett.

Cheryl “Salt” Wray, Sandra “Pepa” Denton, and Deidra “Spinderella” Roper performed a medley of their greatest hits as well as a snippet of their new single “Hands Up,” which will be released to iTunes in the coming weeks. They later united onstage with Sister Sledge for the finale, singing “We Are Family” alongside Sheryl Crow, Miley Cyrus, Avril Lavigne, and more.

S-N-P spoke to Oprah about their humble beginnings. “We actually met in school. We were going to college. I was looking for a job and (Salt) was working upstairs handing out applications in the lunchroom, and I was like, ‘Girl, I need a job!’” said Pepa.

Salt explained that their job as telemarketers was far from glamorous. “We were telephone solicitors at Sears Roebuck and Martin Lawrence worked there, Kid ‘N Play, and Salt-N-Pepa at the same time,” she reminisced. “And now we’re on Oprah!”
