Breaking news broke headlines when news outlets reported unknown gunmen shot Wyclef Jean leaving an election concert Saturday night for presidential candidate and former Haitian superstar Michel "Sweet Mickey" Martelly.
'Clef performed at a concert alongside The Fugees (and yes, Lauryn Hill was there!!!), Busta Rhymes, a host of local artists and Martelly. After the concert, 'Clef left in an armored car with Busta and Jimmy Rosemond when a gunman opened fire. No one was fatally injured, but 'Clef suffered injuries. He later gave his account of what happened that night.
The NY Daily News reports:
"The way I can explain it is that the bullet grazed me in my right hand," said the hip-hop singer, who has been in Haiti campaigning on behalf of Michel (Sweet Micky) Martelly. "I heard blow, blow, blow and I just looked at my hand."
Jean said he was in a car with a driver in the Delmas section of the capital at the time. He doesn't know who fired the shots, or whether they were directed at him, the 37-year-old Grammy winner said.
Police have a different assessment of how 'Clef sustained his injuries. They say the Haitian-American musician was injured by broken glass.
Cops down-played the violence, and say the New Jersey resident - a Haitian-American who hoped to compete in the Caribbean nation's ongoing presidential race - suffered only a minor cut to his hand from glass in an apparent accident. In a statement, Rosemond blamed the incident on those who are against "progressive change":
"We met with the doctor who saw him and he confirmed Wyclef was cut by glass," Vanel Lacroix, police chief in Petionville where Jean is staying, told Reuters.
"It is clear that enemies of progressive change in Haiti are behind the shooting of Wyclef -those that don't want to accept that a monumental change is inevitable for the betterment of the Haitian people," Jimmy Rosemond told AllHipHop.com.
"This incident will not deter those of us that see the election as crucial to the country's future," Jimmy Rosemond continued. "Today, hundreds of thousands of Haitians are heading to the polls to determine the leader of Haiti."
It didn't stop Wyclef from voting, either! On election day Wyclef got dressed and cast his vote for Michel Martelly who ran against law professor and former first lady Mirlande Manigat. We'll update you guys on who won the election! Hopefully there won't be another count of fraud like the one in Haiti's November election.
