Fabolous Talks Rejection From His Father, Loving His Son

There's a song called "Stay" on Fabolous' album Loso's Way that gave him a platform to publicly inquire how a father could deny his son. It's a feeling of personal reflection the rapper R4L had when he had his son Johan Jackson prior to creating the song. In a recent interview, Loso dove deeper into why having his son means so much to him and how he changed his career goals.

I had just had a son prior to doing the record and it made me reflect on my father being absent in my life. It just related to me about how I felt about my son and it was kind of a weird moment for me because if I felt like this about my son, why didn't my father feel like this about me?

Things are different, too— different times, and different generations, and it's a different relationship, too. His relationship with my mom might have been different than my relationship with my child's mother. It was something that came naturally together for me, so it was something I definitely wanted to talk about and I felt like people related to it going through the same thing.

How has having your son changed your perspective on the game and on life?
It really made me look at what I do in hip-hop as a career. It's something I like to do and I get paid well to do it. It's something I look forward to doing in the future as well. Not just doing music, but laying the blueprint down for somebody else after me. I never had that type of responsibility before. My responsibility was paying my bills and making sure my family kept smiles on their faces, but now I'm not thinking about smiling. I'm thinking about the future, what he's going to when he gets the chance to make his decisions about what he wants to do. Having the options of doing them.

I started to feel like that's what being successful was all about— being able to carry that success to your siblings, your family and your son. More options doing what he likes to do. I come from not having so many options. I almost lucked-up in a way. It's a little bit of luck and maintaining the opportunity and making the most of it. He may not have that same luck or the same opportunity, so maybe my success could give him those branches to help do what he wants to do.
