In music news:
Aretha Franklin called Wendy Williams live yesterday to update her many fans on her health and Halle Berry playing her in a biopic. Here are the highlights:
ON HEALTH:
Wendy: I’ve never made it a secret that I love Aretha Franklin and recently it’s been being reported that Aretha Franklin was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Well naturally we’ve all been concerned about our ‘Queen of Soul’ so we wanted to know how she is doing and she’s joining us now on the telephone from her home in Detroit [Michigan.] Ladies and gentlemen the one and only Aretha Franklin. Hi Aretha!
Aretha: Hi Wendy, how you doin’?
WW: How you doin’?AF: And how you doin’?
WW: Miss Franklin you know that you are my dream guest on the show and I’ll take you any way I can get you so here you are on the phone. How is your health?
AF: Thank you my health is superb. It is superb.
WW: Now Miss Franklin I want you to know in case you aren’t watching your screen right now in Detroit but the picture we are showing is the exact one that you requested that you sent to us to show.
AF: That’s my most recent PR picture.
WW: It’s beautiful in the red. You look beautiful the red and everything.
AF: Now thank you, I love your hair.
WW: Thank you! You know I love my wigs Miss Franklin.
AF: Alright girl.
ON RECOVERY
WW: Now because of your recent health and now your recovery- by the way Miss Franklin, where are you recovering, are you up in your bedroom right now?
AF: No I came down to the hotel for a few days because I wanted to change the scenery so I just came down to the hotel, one of the casino hotels in downtown Detroit.
WW: Luxurious.
AF: I’m looking for a fabulous beach. I think the closest place would probably be Hilton Head.
WW: Aren’t we all but once you do that speedy recovery, that’s exactly where you will be going first…
AF: I do still have two more weeks of down time before I can get out.
WW: Oh and then when you get out- Miss Franklin do you actually drive? Do you get behind a wheel and drive?
AF: No I don’t drive. I don’t drive.
ON TOURING:
WW: Now are you planning on…rescheduling your tours anytime soon?
AF: Absolutely, all of the dates I had to cancel- Radio City, Kansas City, Washington and Virginia will be rescheduled right off the top.
ON MUSIC:
AF: Now tell me this. Who are you listening to?
WW: Well I listen to you. That’s why I’m glad you’re calling. You know I read all the magazines cause I know you’re a fan of the show I heard it through the pipeline…you know we love hot topics.
AR: I mean musical artists
WW: Oh musical artists, oh let me see. Gee I like a lot, everybody from Ke$ha and Lady GaGa to Rick Ross. You know I still like my hip hop, but I love the classics- I love you [Aretha Franklin] and Sylvester…remember Sylvester?
AR: Oh absolutely. Do you love the song that R. Kelly just recorded?
WW: Yeah, you know…
AF: ‘When A Woman Loves’ [name of song]
WW: Yes.
AR: I think any woman that’s ever been in love will readily relate to that song. He is singing that song. I mean he is singing his heart and his soul out. You know if he isn’t careful I might become a cougar.
ON BIOPIC:
WW: Ohhh so see, that’s why I’m glad you’re on the phone. Hey by the way, they [production] is telling me we have to wrap up but before we do that. I heard there is a biopic in the process for your life and who’s going to be playing you.
AF: Yes, for the last four years we’ve been talking about that and I have had a number of offers but unfortunately they were not good offers. Now we have something on the table. They have all of the financing on one project and the second project, he is in the process of writing things for me to approve.
WW: And who’s you?
AF: Halle Berry is my pick…[inaudible]…and there’s a young Aretha that is yet to be named.
WW: Miss Franklin…Miss Franklin are you there?
AF: I’m here Miss Wendy.
WW: So miss Franklin I know when you go on tour you are going to pass through New York and I just love and respect and revere you so much. I would like to do two things with you.
AF: Ok.
WW: And you just mull this over. I want you to come to New York and I would like to share a meal with you at a restaurant, just us- do that girl talk. We’ll have the cameras but not all up in our face- just discreetly in the corner. And then I would like for us to continue our conversation here [The Wendy Williams Show] on the couch and if you’re feeling up to it you can perform but if we do nothing more than have girl talk. I would love that.
AF: Ok. That sounds good, I’ll put it at the top of my list.
WW: Now you don’t have to answer me now, if you don’t want to but just think about that and speedy recovery and thank you so much for calling.
AF: Thank you Wendy…I would like to thank the audience at home [slightly inaudible]
Glad to hear she is in good spirits and doing well.
