6 Fun Facts About The BET Awards 2010

The BET Awards went down not too long ago and had the world talking for quite some time. Between Kanye West's "Power" performance to Pattie LaBelle's shoe-kicking tribute to Prince to a very pregnant Alicia Keys' seducing us on top of her piano, it was something not to miss. If you CLICK HERE you could catch up on all of the performances you missed out on.

No award show goes down as planned and this year was no different. In an interview with BET Vice President of Music Programming, Stephen Hill, AllHipHop got to the bottom of a few issues including one flub involving Guru's passing...

AllHipHop.com: There's quite a bit of buzz going on in particular with the Hip-Hop Community with regards to Guru. He didn't get a shoutout at the BET Awards over the weekend.

Stephen Hill: In a show that had every few technical glitches, it was nothing more than a technical glitch. It was the same reason you didn't see anything about Naomi Sims (the first African American supermodel) a Black model who passed, and Marvin Isley of the Isley Brothers. So, Guru, Naomi Sims and Marvin Isley were all tied to this one [ video ] package that didn't fire off the way it was supposed to. What was supposed to happen is you see this package and Naomi and Guru and and Marvin end up on Gary Coleman. For some reason, we couldn't get it to fire and it kept Gary Coleman up there a freeze [frame]. That's why we kept Gary up there as a freeze.

AllHipHop.com: Right, I saw that.

Stephen Hill: That's why it looks a little awkward when Todd [Bridges] started, because he was supposed to have a bit of a ramp up. So, Todd did his thing and we continued on with Lena and Teddy Pendergrass [dedication]. You can best believe there will be something significant for Guru during the Hip-Hop Awards. We realized there was nothing we could do [during the BET Awards]. We had to keep it moving after that technical glitch. Guru, Naomi Sims and Marvin Isley were all victims of that technical glitch. All extremely influential in different ways.

That explains the Guru flub, but what about those Chris Brown tears? After his long awaited Michael Jackson tribute, Breezy broke down into crocodile tears in the middle of the "Man In The Mirror" song and left the stage to the roar of an impressed audience. It was the performance that had all the makings to have everyone get back on Team Breezy since his violent break-up with Rihanna in early 2009. Some speculated that those tears were fake, another took credit to giving Breezy the idea to cry on stage. So what's the real deal? Hill clears the air once and for all...

Stephen Hill: ... I think the pressure of the year and the lyrics of that song really just resonated. And, as someone who was backstage, there was nothing fake about that. I think there is a US Weekly story today about like his bodyguard gave him something to induce tears. Its just not true. I've been around actors who cry and when you fake cry, you don't get...your throat doesn't get swollen like it does [when you cry for real]. When he was trying to sing, he couldn't get anything out. That's a hard thing to fake. I appreciate people wanting to create controversy, but this guy has gone though a lot this past year, let this emotion be what it is. Everybody comes to the moment where you gotta make that change.

Speaking of Breezy, where were Jay and Beyonce at the BET Awards show? Many news outlets drew conclusions that the Carters boycotted the show because Chris Brown performed that night, but we all know they take luxurious vacations and do heavy traveling to perform at festivals around the world. The boycott rumors are all fake. Hill explains why...

AllHipHop.com: I don't want to jump to far off script, but people are naturally saying that Jay-Z, Beyonce and Rihanna skipped the awards because of Chris Brown.

Stephen Hill: They missed the awards, because...we have this conversation almost every year. And, some years we are really fortunate when Jay-Z and Beyonce are in the house and other times, they go on vacation. But I can absolutely say without reservation that there was no conversation at all around, "If Chris Brown's coming, I'm not coming." That's just false.

After every dope tribute to an iconic artist comes the epic performance given by the honoree themselves and the BET Awards is no different, except Prince never took the stage after he accepted his award. What gives? You had Janelle Monae, Alicia Keys, and Pattie LaBelle sweat out their hair gel just to get Prince to raise his well-plucked eyebrow and he never gave us something to bow down to at the end of the night! Was he really not feeling the tribute? Again, Hill explains what really happened, but this time gave the exclusive to Twitter...

"Prince was meant to perform a 9-minute set after his Lifetime Achievement Award acceptance speech and tribute, but instead he exited the stage and left the building while the crew was putting together the staging for his performance. The stage was whisked away and almost trampled the petite rocker! Thankfully, a quick-thinking stage hand jumped in front of Prince and stopped the moving stage from causing serious harm."

And that brings us to Trey Songz. "Your Side Of The Bed" channels Prince's classic "Purple Rain." Any Prince fan picked that parallel up, but did Prince? As soon as Trey sang the first line of "Purple Rain," Prince's facial expression turn stone-cold solid-- or so we think. Did Prince dig Trigga's dedication? Kevin Liles, Trey's manager, answers that question:

Speaking of underwhelming performances, Nicki Minaj bore a few people with her "Hello Good Morning" stage debut. It seemed as if she were lip syncing instead of using her famous vocal chops to drive fans wild. Truth is, it was BET's tech team's fault. Watch Nicki's performance below at the 2:25 mark filmed by a fan who attended show at the Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium. After that, catch the televised version of this same performance below.
